Use of Cascading Style Sheets.
The Blindness Related Learning's website is an extremely good example of how Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) can be
implemented for website management and design.
For ease of managing our website, we have found using Cascading Style Sheets allow us to separate the design of
presentation of the website from the content of the pages contained within the website.
Also, we can update a single object within all pages by updating a single attribute within one file, instead of
updating multiple files. This saves us time and bandwidth usages.
Use of Server Side Includes (SSI).
As with our implementation of Cascading Style Sheets to improve update times to our website, we also use what is known
as Server Side Includes. In short, this means that we can insert website content from one file into multiple pages.
When this content changes, we just have to update one file instead of multiple files.
This saves time on updating our website to cater to new and exciting content and leaves us more time to assist our
existing and potential members with unparalleled service.
Accessibility.
Just like the sighted, disabled people access the Internet on a daily basis, they also access websites. In light of
this, we have closely followed the following website accessibility guidelines:
- Cascading Style Sheets to version 3.0 which eliminates depreciated and outdated hypertext markup language tags like
the <font> tag.
- Markup is structural and meaningful.
- No content is presented by graphics alone, graphics are not necessary to understand the main content.
- The main navigation menu is as short and easy to access. All main content is provided as near to the top of each
document as possible.
- Each page contained on our website has a disability accessible navigation menu which can be accessed using shortcut
keys. This was implemented due to the fact that many of our potential and existing members do not have visual access to
a mouse.
- Each and every page on our website has been thoroughly tested using the most widely used screen reader software
programs. Currently tested using Window Eyes, Connect Outloud, and JAWS for Windows 3.7, 4.5, and 6.0.
Scalable design.
The Blindness Related Learning's web pages are developed to fit different screen sizes and resolutions. No matter the
size of your screen or what device you are using, you should be able to access our website page content at any
time.
